In June 2014, Glen Williams from TV Week reported that Channel Seven had passed on the option to renew the series and had recently told the cast and crew they would not be required for a third season. Due to this, the last episode of season two had to be hastily rewritten and filmed to accommodate the cancellation and tie up any loose storylines. However, on 25 October 2014, it was announced the show was to be revived by Foxtel for at least two more seasons. Jenni Baird and Deborah Kennedy, who portray Regina Standish and Doris Collins respectively, will both return for season two. Olivia must deal with losing Georgie to his birth mother.

On Christmas Day, George and Sarah host a party for many of their friends and family, including Elizabeth, Roy, Doris, Jack, and a visiting Frank Gibbs. At Prudence's home, a smaller contingent gathers, including Carolyn, Anna, Olivia, Andrew, Delia, Henry, and Harry. All of the Bligh's family and friends are happy with the new directions their lives are taking, with the exception of Jack and Carolyn, who are both miserable. During the lead-up to the new year, a number of significant changes occur. Jack decides to go to Burma to reflect on his wartime service.
On her nightstand is a copy of a book entitled A Place to Call Home, written by a Samantha Swanson, Andrew and Olivia's granddaughter. Carolyn later becomes Inverness's first female MP. Jack received an Order of Australia for his services to rural medicine.
The women's clinic transforms into Jack's community clinic. Sarah returns to Inverness with her husband Rene to attend Anna and Gino's wedding but still has feelings for George. Olivia, feeling guilty about the baby deception, is visited by Andrew prompting feelings of jealousy from James.
